• Application for naturalization requires that the applicant has held a green card for five years or, if legal permanent resident status was obtained through marriage to a U.S. citizen, three years. The applicant must have physically resided in the United States for half of that time.
• A person applying for citizenship must have the ability to read, write, and speak English; a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government; good moral character; uphold the principles of the U.S. Constitution; and demonstrate a favorable disposition toward the United States.
